Colorado State University – Pueblo announces History Day state qualifiers
 
PUEBLO – Nearly 500 middle and high school students from Southern Colorado along with their parents, teachers, and friends celebrated innovations in history as part of Southeastern Colorado History Day competition on March 13 at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

The following middle and high schools participated in 2010 Southeastern Colorado History Day, which focused on Innovations in History: Impact and Change: Connect Charter School, Cesar Chavez Middle School, Manzanola Middle School, Pueblo School of the Arts and Sciences, Swallows Charter Academy,  Southern Colorado Early College, Pleasant View Middle School, La Junta Middle School, La Junta High School, Manzanola High School, Pueblo West High School, Ward Middle School (Crowley).

Historical exhibits were on display in the Occhiato University Center Ballroom as were the talents of students through Documentary Film making, Webpage Design, and Performances. 

CSU-Pueblo students R.J. Hawthorne(sophomore, Pueblo), Kristina Samuelson (junior, Pueblo West),  and Jessie Todd (senior, Pueblo), produced a display and slide presentation honoring the Rawlings Family, area innovators in journalism and philanthropy. Pueblo Chieftain Assistant Publisher Jane Rawlings helped hand out awards to the winning students.   

The winners listed below are eligible to compete in the Colorado History Day State Competition, May 1 in Denver.  State winners advance to the National History Day Competition held in Maryland in June. 

Special awards are open to students competing in all categories and are presented to students who display excellence based on theme or specifications of awards.

• WOMEN’S HISTORY AWARD -  Sponsored by CSU-Pueblo Women’s Studies Dept., Catherine Otero – Performance – Rosie the Riveter 
• CHICANO STUDIES AWARD – Sponsored by the CSU-Pueblo Chicano Studies Dept., Holly Ketterman and Emily Waggener –Webpage – Curitiba, Brazil.  
• UNITED STATES HISTORY AWARD – Sponsored by the CSU-Pueblo History Dept., Luke Glach – Documentary – Navajo Code Talkers
