Secondary school students can investigate the transportation industry as a possible career choice as part of a two-week non-residential Summer Transportation Institute (STI) at Colorado State University - Pueblo in June. The 3rd annual Institute, being sponsored by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and financed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), will run from June 8 to June 19 for students in grades 9 through 11 attending public or private schools in Colorado during the 2008-2009 academic year. Interested students are encouraged to apply immediately.
This is the only Institute of its kind in Colorado. Space in the program is limited to approximately 20 students, who will receive a full scholarship, covering tuition, transportation to and from school, laboratory use, project supplies, field trips, and lunch during the two-week course The program, which runs daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., aims to increase awareness of, and stimulate interest in, the transportation field by offering teens seminars, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. To see a list of other host sites use the following link:
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/civilrights/host.htm During the two-week period, student participants will be introduced to the various modes of the transportation system and to the technical specialties and functional areas of transportation professionals. Students will learn about career opportunities in transportation and the relevant educational and skill requirements. In addition, students will have the opportunity to meet people who work in various areas of the transportation system in the state of Colorado. Students will also participate in a variety of activities including:
(a)
Seminars and demonstrations. Speakers from various transportation organizations will be invited to talk to the students and/or host tours at their facilities. The speakers or hosts will include staff members from the Colorado Department of Transportation, a major airport, and a railroad facility.
(b)
Field Trips. Students will have the opportunity to visit and experience the operations and facilities of the Eisenhower Tunnel, Denver’s Regional Transportation District, airports and railroad facilities.
c)
Projects or Hands-On Activities: Students will work on hands-on projects that will be designed by the STI staff. Activities will include any of the following: Bridge building, layout of a highway circular curve, and water rockets. In addition, each student will create and maintain a Summer Transportation Institute portfolio. The portfolio will be the student depository of activity log and notes.
The selection of participants for the 2009 STI program will consider student interest in the sciences and math and the cumulative grade point average. In addition, each application must include a written recommendation from a teacher or counselor at the student’s school and a school transcript.
All applications should be received at the STI office
as soon as possible and no later than Wednesday, May 27. To contact the STI office, send e-mail to
sylvester.kalevela@colostate-pueblo.edu or call Loretta Cisneros at (719) 549-2890.
