CSU–Pueblo and Coalition of Pueblo Engineers host MathCounts


Nearly 100 mathletes from 15 area middle schools will participate in the MATHCOUNTS Southern Chapter Competition this weekend from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Occhiato University Center at Colorado State University-Pueblo. Initial rounds begin at 9 a.m. with the countdown round and awards ceremony from 12:45 to 2 p.m. Local Newscaster Craig Elliot will provide entertainment as part of the lunch hour.

MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching & competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement and involvement. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, MATHCOUNTS is one of the most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors & students. Eight Colorado chapter competitions will be held throughout February during which students qualify to advance to the state competition March 21 and the University of Denver and national competition May 8 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
This event will be co-hosted by the Coalition of Pueblo Engineers. In Colorado, the program is made possible by the Professional Engineers of Colorado. Schools register with MATHCOUNTS and receive coaching and testing materials in the following topics: algebra, probability, approximation, geometry, and statistics. Problems are designed to accelerate students’ interest and achievement in mathematics.
