Colorado State University - Pueblo sponsors Day of the Dead celebration and altar contest

PUEBLO – Colorado State University – Pueblo will celebrate the Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos, with a prayer vigil, dances, explanatory video, and altar competition and exhibit from 12-1:30 p.m. and 6 -7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2 in the Occhiato University Center. The event is sponsored by the Catholic Campus Ministry, Chicanos Studies Program, Spanish Program, M.E.Ch.A., Mujeres Unidas de CSU-Pueblo, Diversity Resource Center, and the Office of Student Activities.

Altar competitions will be offered for CSU-Pueblo students and for community members with voting by a panel of judges from the Pueblo community. If a student club, campus organizations, or office would like to participate in creating an altar, you must reserve a space by emailing or calling the Coordinator of Chicano Studies Fawn Amber Montoya at fawnamber.montoya@colostate-pueblo.edu, or 719-549-2620. Altar set-up begins on Sunday Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. and must be completed on Nov. 2 no later than 11:30 a.m. (Altar guidelines are attached.)

A 20-minute video and handouts on the meaning and tradition of the Día de los muertos (Day of the Dead) will be available throughout the day in the OUC Ballroom In addition, several food items will be offered free, including pan de muerto from Mexico (plain round sweet bread sprinkled with white sugar and a crisscrossed bone shape on top) and colada morada and guaguas de pan from Ecuador. An activities table also will have available calavera puppets and sugar skulls for decorating.

Día de los muertos altars will be on display in the OUC  Ballroom and the  Great Hall. A non-denominational prayer vigil will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. in the OUC Ballroom for those who have passed on. At the vigil, attendees may honor their loved ones by placing a photo of them at the designated prayer table.

The day and evening time slots both will feature performances by Toch.tli Aztec Dancers.
