A total of 175 Southern Colorado high school musicians recently visited the Colorado State University-Pueblo campus for two days of instruction by University faculty and guest clinicians as members of the fourth Southern Colorado Honor Choir and Orchestra. Rehearsals for their performances culminated in a standing room only concert on Nov. 22 in CSU-Pueblo’s Hoag Recital Hall.
Selected by their high school music teachers, students represented 25 high schools, two Pueblo middle schools, and the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony. Instruction was provided by CSU-Pueblo faculty Dr. Dana Ihm, assistant professor of music; and Veronika String Quartet members
Veronika Afanassieva, Ekaterina Dobrotvorskaia, Karine Garibova, and Mary Artmann.
Guest conductors were Steven Meininger and Gary Nicholson. With 36 years of public school instruction, Meininger currently teaches at Metropolitan State College of Denver. He has been the Director of the Denver Chamber Chorale, touring Europe with concert tours seven times, and the Associate Director of the Colorado Chorale. Meininger works extensively as adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor throughout Colorado, Montana, and Kansas. He has been awarded numerous awards including High School Director of the Year, presented by the Colorado Chapter of the American Choral Director’s Association; and Hall of Fame Member, presented by the Jefferson County Music Teacher’s Association as well as nominations in “Who’s Who in American Education” and “Who’s Who in America.
Nicholson, conductor of the Youth Symphony Orchestra, co-founded the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association in 1980. As a trumpeter, Nicholson has performed with the Aspen Music Festival, Wichita Symphony, Colorado Opera Festival, Colorado College Conservatory of Music, Colorado Springs Chorale, Music Theater of the Rockies, Fine Arts Center Repertory Teacher, Colorado Springs Symphony Orchestra, and was a founding member of the Colorado Springs Symphony Brass Quintet and Pikes Peak Brass Quintet. He also has performed with Abendmusik, a professional quality vocal chamber ensemble. He also has toured orchestras to Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, and Eastern Europe. Nicholson currently teaches music at Broadmoor Elementary School in Colorado Springs District 12 and performs with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic.
