Physiologist/geneticist to discuss alternative energy production at CSU–Pueblo

Alternative energy and its potential economic impact on southeastern Colorado will be the focus of a presentation by Dr. Dan Caprioglio, professor of biology and microbial physiologist/geneticist at Colorado State University-Pueblo, sponsored by the university’s Hasan School of Business.
Dr. Caprioglio will present “Blowing in the Wind: The Truth about Alternative Energy,” beginning at 5:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Hasan School of Business Auditorium. His lecture is the second of three in the business school’s Distinguished Speakers Series. The Future of Energy is the theme of this year’s series.
The alternative energy industry encompasses several differ types of energy production, including include solar, wind, nuclear, biofuel, geothermal, hydroelectric, hydrogen and wave energy. Yet none of these are the “magic bullet” to fulfill the energy requirements for the world economy. Areas that will be addressed in the discussion of these energy production methods include baseline energy, portability, efficiency, and resource requirements. The presentation will conclude with the use of industrial waste streams as a source of feedstock to convert to alternative energy.

Caprioglio earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from UCLA in 1983, a doctoral degree in microbiology from North Carolina State University in 1989, and conducted post-doctorate work at the University of New Mexico from 1989 to 1993. He has extensive experience in molecular biology and genetics of yeast saccharomyces cerevisiae. He recently spent a one-year sabbatical in the Biocatalysis Laboratory of Mike Zachariou in Clayton, Victoria, Australia. This work was pointed to using microbes to produce value products that work with production from two liters to 800,000-liter scale. These methods are used in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biofuel industries. Caprioglio also has consulted for the largest biofuel plant in Australia (CSR Sarina).

Refreshments will be provided for all guests. Due to limited space, reservations are recommended to 719-549-2142.
