CSU–Pueblo Sponsors Fifth Annual Young Women’s Workshop

The Women’s Studies Program at Colorado State University-Pueblo is asking young women to “explore your dreams—explore strategies in career and life planning that can make a difference in the real world.”

The fifth annual Young Women’s Real World Conference will be held at CSU-Pueblo’s Occhiato University Center from 8 a.m.- 3p.m. on Wed., Nov. 12.

Aimed at high school women in Pueblo County, the conference utilizes workshop coaches, panelists, career activities, and a scavenger hunt to help these teens examine post-secondary options. The event expects to attract 80-85 registrants.

The brainchild of former Women’s Studies Program Director Dr. Carol Loats, the November event has attracted a committed and engaged variety of community and campus planners who spend months organizing the workshop.

“We’ve had tremendous support from the community, including a number of dedicated committee members who show up week after week to plan this event. And this year, we’ve been fortunate to get a grant from the Pueblo Alliance for Healthy Teens to help underwrite the conference,” said Loats.

In addition, students from Dr. Karen Yescavage’s Introduction to Women’s Studies course are earning service learning credit by volunteering to assist in planning and logistics for the event.
“Students can learn a lot from serving in the community. There’s been lots of excitement around this project. For some, it’s very powerful,” said Yescavage, who serves as interim director of the Women’s Studies Program.

The conference is underwritten on campus by the Office of the President, the Provost’s Office, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. For more information, call Trish Orman at 549-2818. After Nov. 9, contact Carol Loats, 549-2348.
