The University Archives of Colorado State-Pueblo has acquired a collection of archival materials related to the Chicano Movement in Colorado of Puebloan Freddie “Freak” Trujillo, a leader and activist within the Chicano community. These materials represent the first donation to the Colorado Chicano Movement Archives, an important part of the Southern Colorado Ethnic Heritage and Diversity Archives. This project has been established by the University Archives to collect, preserve and make accessible the records, papers and manuscripts of the individuals, families and organizations of the varied racial, ethnic and cultural groups of Pueblo and Southern Colorado.
A longstanding member of the United Mexican American Students and a driving force of the Aztlan Boycott Coors Committee, Trujillo has dedicated his life to the struggle for racial and social equality for the Chicano people. Trujillo’s archival collection includes numerous photographs, slides, newspapers, motion picture films, audio tapes and other primary resources documenting the Chicano Movement. The initial phase of the archives program has been generously funded by a grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
A reception will be held on Monday, September 15 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on the first floor of the University Library both to recognize the donation and launch Hispanic Heritage month on campus. An exhibit of art, artifacts and documents celebrating the Chicano experience will be displayed. Trujillo and Deborah Espinoza, director of the El Pueblo Museum and a long-time Chicana activist, will briefly discuss the history of the Chicano Movement. Light refreshments will be provided.
The University Archive is actively soliciting additional donations to the Chicano Movement Collection. Please contact CSU-Pueblo Archivist Jay Trask at (719) 549-2475.
