Up with People CEO to discuss citizenship, volunteerism, leadership at CSU–Pueblo

Tommy Spaulding, CEO and president of the internationally renowned student leadership organization Up With People, overcame dyslexia to not only graduate from college but go on and earn two master’s degrees. He will address the vital role that the millennial generation can play in reshaping and redefining the America of tomorrow, during his Nov. 14 talk “Red, White and YOU: The Way Citizenship, Volunteerism and Leadership Can Transform a Nation.”

Part of the Hasan School of Business Distinguished Speakers Series, Spaulding’s performance begins at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the HSB Auditorium. Refreshments will be provided immediately after the lecture.

Spaulding was named the fifth president & CEO of the 42-year old international nonprofit global leadership program, Up with People, in 2005. Before taking the helm at Up with People, Spaulding founded Leader’s Challenge, which has become the largest high school civic and leadership program in Colorado.

“Leadership is about how you react to failure,” says Spaulding, who has seen his share of success and failure. In his two years as CEO, he has helped revitalize a venerable organization that challenges young adults to assume ownership in their lives and their communities, and teaches them the power of community service through practical application and experiential learning.

“If we’re going to build a great America,” Spaulding says, “it’s really about building an America of ownership, where community service is what you do when you do something right.”

Prior to founding Leader’s Challenge in July 2000, Spaulding was the director of corporate affiliates for Up with People. Previous to this, Spaulding worked for IBM/Lotus Development in Boston as the Northeast Business Partner Sales Manager.

Spaulding is the youngest of the 500-member Denver Rotary Club, a member of the Denver Future Forum, a graduate of the Leadership Program of the Rockies (2003) and a graduate of Leadership Denver (2005). In 2002, Spaulding received the prestigious Denver Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award and keynoted this event in 2006. He also serves on the board of directors of Johnson and Wales University’s Community Leadership Institute, Museum of Outdoor Arts, Leader’s Challenge and Up with People.
