The Southern Colorado Reading Series at Colorado State University - Pueblo is pleased to announce an evening with filmmaker/actor Michael James Kacey beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 5 in the Life Science Auditorium.
Kacey is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker whose first film, Daybreak, has been released by Tapeworm Video. His second film, the documentary The Poet Laureate of Radio: An Interview with Norman Corwin, is now available through The Lodestone Catalog. Kacey is currently working on a documentary feature film called Radio Changed America and adapting a novel into a screenplay. As an actor, Kacey’s credits include Live from Baghdad as well as commercials and stage performances. Leonard Maltin said in 2006 of Kacey’s Poet Laureate, “To have this chronicle…is priceless.”
For Michael Kacey, the dream of bringing DayBreak to the screen has been a triumph. DayBreak is the story of man whose wish to change one event from his past leads to a nightmarish new life. After a decade of day-player and minor guest starring roles as an LA actor, Kacey has finally found what he loves. Directing.
“There’s a lot of complexity to it,” Kacey notes. “No matter what phase of the project, whether it be pre-production, the shoot, or post-production, there are thousands of decisions to be made. How well you make those decisions determine the fate of the film. I love that process.”
Since most of the film takes place in a depressed coal-mining town in Pennsylvania, Kacey knew exactly where to go. A native of Shamokin, Penn., a small city whose population grew and fell with the anthracite mining industry, the area gave the look he was seeking. The late March shoot also aided the quest for a cold, barren and overcast look for the film.
