Colorado State University – Pueblo President Joe Garcia, along with former student athletes Steve and Andrea Shirley, have been named honorary chairs for the fifth annual Farmers
Insurance Walk for Athletics and James “Spank” Blasing Memorial 5K.
The Farmers Insurance Walk for Athletics and James “Spank” Blasing Memorial 5K,
scheduled for April 21, 2007 on the CSU-Pueblo campus, is the largest, single fund-raising event
the CSU-Pueblo athletic department conducts annually. Over the past four years, more than
$75,000 has been raised for the ThunderWolves student-athlete scholarship fund.
The registration fee to participate in the Walk or the Spank Blasing 5K is $25 per person.
The price includes a T-shirt and sports water bottle, free pre-event coffee and juice, and a
complimentary post-event breakfast.
The Walk also provides area non-profit organizations and campus clubs an opportunity to
raise money. All non-profits and/or campus clubs who participate in the Walk receive 50% of all
donations the individual organization collects.
Garcia, who is in his first year as president at CSU-Pueblo, is an avid outdoorsman and
stays in shape by lifting weights, riding his bike, and running. President Garcia understands the
importance and benefits of a healthy lifestyle, which are promoted through the Walk for
Steve and Andrea met while they were student-athletes at CSU-Pueblo. Steve, who owns
Benefits Broker Insurance, arrived at CSU-Pueblo from New Mexico to play basketball, while
Andrea, from near by Walsenburg, played volleyball in the early 1990s. Andrea went on to
serve as assistant volleyball coach for several years at CSU-Pueblo following her playing career.
