CSU–Pueblo hosts civic engagement brunch with new sheriff

Newly elected Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor will discuss opportunities for public service at a Feb. 8 brunch on civic engagement coordinated by the English Club and Sigma Tau Delta at Colorado State University – Pueblo.

The brunch will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8 in the Occhiato University Center Aspen Leaf Room. Taylor will discuss his path to public service and the importance of civic engagement. Tanya Baird and Michelle Gjerde from the CSU-Pueblo Career Center will inform students about opportunities for becoming involved in the community while attending CSU-Pueblo. Participants also will learn about the Student Academic Writing Award Competition and hear brief readings from winning submissions by student authors. This year, a new category focused on civic engagement has been added to the writing contest sponsored by the New York Times. Student authors interested in submitting to this category are asked to respond to any article present in an issue of the New York Times, but special attention will be given to papers that address civic engagement, a focus of The American Democracy Project, an organizations with which CSU-Pueblo is affiliated (http://www.nytimes.com/college/collegespecial2/).

Taylor defeated Dan Corsentino who had been the Pueblo County Sheriff of 16 years. Last November, Taylor defeated the long-time sheriff with a 58 to 42 percent majority vote and was sworn into office on Jan 9. Taylor has previously been an investigator for the district attorney’s office. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English with a history minor from then University of Southern Colorado in 1995.

This brunch event is free, however, reservations are necessary as seating is limited to 50 attendees. To reserve a seat or for more information on the writing competition, contact Dr. Katherine Frank, assistant professor of English and foreign languages, at 719-549-2595 or katherine.frank@colostate-pueblo.edu.
