Fall 2013 - Spring 2014 Recipients


Lauren Bartolo  is the daughter of Classified Employee, David Bartolo

Personal biography: My name is Lauren Bartolo.  I am currently a senior who will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a bachelor’s degree of business administration in business management.  Once I complete my undergraduate degrees I hope to go on to graduate school and earn my master’s degree in chemistry.  With my degree I plan to pursue a career in water safety and purity or in the steel or energy industries when I graduate from CSU-Pueblo.​







Nicole Bartolo is the daughter of Classified Employee, David Bartolo

Personal Biography: Hello, my name is Nicole Bartolo. I am currently a junior nursing student at CSU-Pueblo, and I hope to graduate next year with my bachelors of nursing. After that I plan on pursuing specialty courses in surgical nursing, and become more of an expert in this particular nursing area. With my degree I hope to be able to work in a hospital assisting the doctors through a surgery and help many people.      







Tyler Torres is the son of Classified Employee, Jennifer Torres

Personal Biography: I am currently a freshman at CSU-Pueblo and I plan to earn a degree in Biology. With that degree, I hope to become a District Wildlife Manager with the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Enjoying the beauty of Colorado's amazing state parks and national forests has fascinated me for as long as I can remember, and my love for the outdoors will be my motivation in my pursuit of my aspirations. I also really enjoy playing sports, especially lacrosse, and I hope to become a part of the future lacrosse program here at CSU-P. I am excited to experience my future as a Thunderwolf and all that college has to offer for me.



Makenzie Smith is the daughter of Classified Employee, Chris Smith

Personal biography: My mom has worked in the CSU-Pueblo Bookstore for 17 years and CSU-Pueblo has been part of our family for the majority of my life. I am a sophomore majoring in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in English and will be applying to the Teacher Education Program. It’s a dream in the making to be in college and on the path to fulfilling my goal of being a missionary through teaching. The Classified Staff Council scholarship has had a big hand in bringing me to where I am today and getting me closer to impacting the lives of the future children of Pueblo. I chose to attend CSU-Pueblo so I could stay close to family and after hearing positive feedback about the Teacher Education Program from a recent graduate. I am blessed and honored to be a part of something so special and to have the wonderful support of the Classified Staff Council in seeing my dream become a reality.

Personal biography: Throughout my life I have had a great desire to help people in need. I want to give of my time and talent and give back all that has been given to me throughout my whole life. I am a sophomore in college and am studying nursing, which I plan on obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in. I believe that this field of study provides me with the great opportunity and honor to provide citizens in our community with health care. One of the individuals who I look up to most is my dad who is a Computer Programmer at CSU-Pueblo. I choose to attend CSU-Pueblo because it offers an exemplary nursing program and the college provides a wonderful learning environment. I would like to thank all of the individuals who choose me as recipient of this scholarship. Thanks again!

Dominick Bregar is the nephew of Classified Employee, Patty Martin

Personal biography: I am currently a freshman at Colorado State University-Pueblo. I plan to earn a degree in Business Management and to possibly get drafted into the MLB.  Baseball is my passion and favorite past time. I would love to compete at a higher level.  Baseball is more than a game and has taught me life skills such as being punctual, dedicated, hard working, disciplined, and most of all being a leader and team player.  I am also proud to be playing for the CSU-Pueblo baseball team and look forward to the opportunities college has to offer.​

Amanda Torres is the daughter of Classified Employee, Jennifer Torres

Personal biography: In the past few years I have acquired a passion for Engineering and Business, which has lead me to pursue a degree in Construction Management at Colorado State University. With this degree I hope to achieve great success in the construction field. Along with my passion for Engineering and Business I also enjoy running and playing soccer. I am currently a runner for the CSU-Pueblo Cross Country and Track team. Being a student athlete has allowed me to grow as an individual and learn the importance of prioritizing my life in order to achieve success. Thus far CSU-Pueblo has provided me with great opportunities and inspiration, as a student as well as an athlete. I am excited to continue my journey in college as a Thunderwolf and experience everything CSU-Pueblo has to offer me.

 Phil ValdezPhillip M. Valdez  is the son of Classified Employee, Paul Valdez

Personal biography: I am a senior set to graduate in the spring, May 2012, with concurrent Bachelor of Science degrees; one in political science and the other in sociology with emphasis in criminology and a minor in psychology. My father, Paul Valdez LTC Operation I, is a Colorado State University Pueblo classified staff employee and it was because of him that I was given this opportunity and was eligible for this scholarship. There are several reasons why I chose CSU-Pueblo, including, the school's location and the many opportunities that I have been given through the schools many programs. Throughout my life my goals and aspirations have been ever changing and I have learned through life’s experiences that circumstances can detour or even change ones goals and aspirations. After graduating from CSU-Pueblo I would like to further my education and aspire to go to law school.

Personal biography: My dad has worked in the IT department as a database administrator for quite a while.  I am a junior and currently working on a dual degree in Chemistry and Business Management.  I chose to attend CSU-Pueblo because I wanted to get a good education while staying close to home.  When I graduate I hope to work in the chemistry field and in time apply the research knowledge gained there and apply it to industry.

Courtney Gust is the sister of classified employee, Samantha Hernandez

Personal biography: My name is Courtney Gust and I am a senior at Colorado State University-Pueblo.  I will be graduating in the spring semester of 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in anthropology. After graduation, I plan to pursue a Master’s degree with an emphasis in cognitive neuroscience.   I chose to attend Colorado State University-Pueblo because I was able to remain close to my family, attain my degree quickly, and because of the financial aid opportunities I was awarded.  I received scholarships based on merit, residency, and also my relationship to a classified staff member.   My classified staff family member is my sister, Samantha Hernandez, who works in the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office on campus.
